Choosing Masking Curtain Fabrics
Masking fabrics are typically used up-stage of the proscenium curtains. They are used to hide or "mask" off-stage areas, rigging, hardware, and stage lighting equipment. Masking curtains include borders, legs or side curtains and mid-stage, up-stage, and rear travelers. When shopping fabrics for masking curtains, consider a fabric's light blocking abilities, sound absorption qualities, flame rating, weight, and size.
Note about Opacity
Very few fabrics can be called "totally opaque". To that end, fabrics listed below which are "Very Good" or better can be considered functionally opaque in most settings where light is not being shined directly onto the back of the curtain.
Note about Sound Absorption
All of the fabrics listed below will dampen sound to some degree, but some are definitely more effective than others. We've given non-scientific, subjective ratings for each, however, fabrics marked "Excellent" are accoustically-rated. Keep in mind that environment also has an effect on a fabric's ability to dampen sound; it's not just about the fabric.
