There are lots of things to consider before ordering school stage curtains, so many things it can feel like, well, homework. We realize that the process of choosing stage curtains for your school stage can feel like a daunting task so we've listed the most important things to consider below.
Types of School Stage Curtains
The diagram at left shows a typical stage curtain layout. Your school's stage layout may be different but this is a good place to start. School Stage Curtains can be categorized into three types: proscenium or main curtains, masking curtains, and backdrops or cycloramas.
Choosing Fabric for School Stage Curtains
Depending on curtain type, certain fabrics tend to work better than others. For example, stage curtains are typically made from heavier velours while backdrops are made from scrim or muslin. Our suggestions for curtain and backdrops are listed below. View our full line of fabrics here.
Suggested Velour Combinations for Main and Back Curtains
Premium Polyester - 25 oz. Charisma (main) and 20 oz. Crescent (back)
Performance Polyester - 20 oz. Crescent (main) and 15 oz. Valdosta (back) / Cotton - 25 oz. Memorable (main) and 21 oz. Marvel (back)

Suggested Backdrop Fabrics

Stage Fabric Flame Retardancy
Most fabric is flammable. Some theatrical fabrics, however, have inherent flame retardant characteristics, wile others can be made to be flame retardant with chemical treatment. Federal regulations require that theatrical fabrics hung in schools, theatres and venues be flame retardant. Learn more about flame retardancy ratings.
Hanging School Stage Curtains
School stage curtains can be hung in a variety of ways. They can be tied to pipe or be made with webbing and grommets so they may be hung from stage curtain track with drapery hardware. Curtain track can be straight or curved, ceiling mounted or suspended, motorized, rope-operated, or walk-along (hand-pulled). While your school's individual curtain track installation may differ, 280-Series track is typically used for main stage curtains, 170-Series for the back, and 140-Series for curved applications. Planning for and purchasing stage curtain track should be done with the help of one of our Stageperts to ensure the safety of your crew and performers.
School Stage Curtain Finishes
A stage curtain needs to be finished on the sides and bottom as well as the top. For example, scrims and cycs are sewn with a pipe pocket at the bottom so they can be weighted and ultimately hang straight; stage curtains are sewn with weight tape to achieve the same result. Your school stage's individual requirements will determine how your stage curtains are hung and how ultimately how your curtains are finished.
The two most common finishes requested are sewn with 50% fullness and 3" box pleats or flat. Usually, the main, valance and back curtains are sewn with 50% fullness and scrims and cycs are sewn flat.
Curtains hung from pipe are typically finished with webbing, grommets and ties, while curtains hung from track are sewn with webbing, grommets and s-hooks.
Valance and Curtain Lettering
What's a school stage curtain without iconic chenille lettering? If your school needs its name or initials emblazoned on a curtain in the colors and style of your choice, you're in the right place... Chenille lettering is elementary to us. Learn more.
Skirting for School Stages
Stage skirting is great for concealing the area under a stage from the audience's view. It's also sometimes used as a finishing touch. Contact one of our Stageperts for more info.
How much do school stage curtains cost?
The big question... with the not-so-simple answer. Every school stage is different so the cost can vary greatly depending on the factors listed above. We work with schools and academic institutions of all sizes, from middle schools with the smallest of stages to universities with massive performing arts centers. Whatever your needs and budget, our Stageperts will help you to realize the school stage of your dreams.
